It is illegal to share prescription medications for very good reasons. Taking someone else's prescribed medication can kill or maim, and should not be done. The only case in which a prescribed medication could possibly be legally used for another individual is an extreme emergency situation, in an attempt to save a life. In these situations the law often allows almost any measure in an attempt to prevent a death and many of our emergency medications are there to do just that.

A one year expiration date is placed on all prescription medications filled, as dictated by law. Do they go bad after this? Some may decrease in potency and can become dangerous if this happens, such as antiarrhythmic or blood glucose regulating medicine. Other medications to watch out for after their expiration date is extended release formulations which can "dump" high concentrations of drug at once, if the extended release mechanism becomes compromised. Otherwise, most drugs are good far beyond their expiration date in reality, but legally we are required to tell you to eject any prescription drugs beyond this.
